Cambridge shares some of Oxford's heritage complexity but has its own distinct commercial character. The city centre is compact, heavily conserved, and increasingly pressured by the growth of the technology and biotech sectors that have made Cambridge one of the fastest-growing economies in the UK. This growth has created sustained demand for high-quality commercial frontages — from traditional retail units on Sidney Street and Petty Cury to the new restaurant and leisure premises emerging in developments around the station quarter and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The historic core — including the area around King's Parade, Trinity Street, and Market Square — is among the most tightly controlled conservation environments in the country. Buildings here sit cheek-by-jowl with the university colleges, and shopfront alterations are assessed not only against Cambridge City Council's shopfront design guidance but also in the context of their visual relationship with Grade I and Grade II* listed college buildings. Mill Road is Cambridge's equivalent of Oxford's Cowley Road — a long, diverse independent retail street running south-east from the city centre through Romsey Town and Coleridge. The building stock is Victorian terraced shops, many with original or period shopfronts that have been altered over the decades. Conservation area status applies along much of the street, and shopfront proposals need to demonstrate that they respect the established character. We have completed installations on Mill Road that balance commercial functionality with the design sensitivity that the planning context requires.

The Cambridge science park, business park, and biomedical campus environments present very different requirements. These are modern commercial developments where the shopfront and entrance specifications are driven by the building's design code, fire strategy, and DDA requirements rather than conservation considerations. We are equally comfortable working to developer specifications and coordinating with principal contractors on phased handover programmes.
